Brian Paul Lamotte (b. 1984, San Francisco, USA) is an independent graphic designer & publisher specializing in art and photography books. Educated in graphic design at London’s Central St. Martins, he established his creative practice in New York and is currently based between Milano and Zürich.

His process-based practice relies on a close collaboration with artists, editors and printers, and often emphasizes the haptic qualities of print through the use of materials, hand-done treatments and specialized production. His design approach utilizes extensive visual and production research paired with image-led solutions and minimal typography. His publishing practice is driven by exploration and experimentation with the book form, production methods and models of distribution.

He has designed and produced various books and projects for select publishers and clients including Aperture Foundation, Dashwood Books, Edition Patrick Frey, Fondation Louis Vuitton, GOST BooksHauser & Wirth Publishers, Images Vevey, Ithaca Image Text Press, Jiazazhi, MAST FoundationMeta/Books, MoMA, Pro Helvetia, Rizzoli,SPBH Editions and Twin Palms Publishers.

His work is included in the collections of the International Center for Photography Library, The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Library, The Getty Research Institute, The Metropolitan Museum of Art Library, Fotobibliothek (Winterthur) and the Yale University Library Special Collections. Additionally his books and projects have been exhibited and sold throughout various cultural institutions, book fairs and bookstores around the world.

In 2020 MOM by Charlie Engman was shortlisted for First PhotoBook (Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards) and The Author’s Book Award (Rencontres D’arles Book Awards).

In 2018 My Birth by Carmen Winant and Khichdi (Kitchari) by Nick Sethi were shortlisted for the Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards for PhotoBook of the Year and First PhotoBook respectively.

In 2015 the installation-based vending machine, Zine Time, was exhibited and activated as part of The Newsstand by Lele Saveri within “Ocean of Images: New Photography 2015” at The Museum of Modern Art, NYC. After the exhibition, The Newsstand was acquired as part of the permanent collection of the MoMA.

In 2017 the vending machine was also exhibited and re-activated for the exhibition “Being Modern: MoMA in Paris” at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris.

From 2008 to 2018 he published and designed artists’ books, photobooks and zines under PWP (Pau Wau Publications) with photographer Andreas Laszlo Konrath, working with over 65 artists and producing over 50 publications and various installations.
